The Hebrew University of Jerusalem sent a letter on Sunday to Professor Nadira Shalhoub-Kiburkian of the Faculty of Law after she signed a public petition claiming that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

"We read with astonishment, disgust and deep disappointment the public petition you published, purporting to state that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. In the same petition, you also claim that Israel has occupied Palestine for 75 years, or in other words, since the War of Independence." According to the Mossad, she signed the terrible letter while associating herself with the Hebrew University.

Asher Cohen, the president, wrote to her: "We regret and are ashamed that the Hebrew University includes a faculty member like you. In light of your feelings, we believe that you should consider leaving your post," and noted that they were ashamed not to find in the petition any reference to condemnation of Hamas' horrific acts of terrorism.

According to the Hebrew, accusing Israel of occupying Palestine attempts, in fact, to undermine the basis of Israel's right to exist: "It is unnecessary to elaborate in words the severity and absurdity of this claim, which is also not supported by the UN."

The Hebrew University argued in the letter that the lecturer's claim about genocide that Israel is allegedly committing these days is not very far from offenses of incitement and sedition – offenses that would have enabled them to discipline her and demand her suspension or expulsion from the Hebrew University: "You may be aware of the fact that Israel adopted the UN Convention on the Prevention of Genocide in 1950. This charter was written mainly in the wake of the genocide of the Jewish people in the Holocaust."

They claimed: "The military operation Israel is waging to defeat the murderous terrorist organization Hamas does not come close to the definition of genocide under international law. On the other hand, the horrific massacre carried out by Hamas on October 7 against Jews, wherever they may be, falls completely under this definition."
