Opinion | The goal: to eliminate the threat from the north now | Israel Hayom

2023-11-09T08:11:28.587Z

Highlights: Residents of the north adjacent to the fence are waiting for the State of Israel to take responsibility and neutralize the threat from Hezbollah. With eyes on the south, it seems that the IDF is responding weakly in Lebanon, and the temporary evacuees may become permanent. The state has shown weakness – not even a Hezbollah tent in Israeli territory has been evacuated. The residents of the fence will not be able to return home while Hezbollah's plan to conquer the Galilee remains in place, while the Radwan force remains south of the Litani.

We alerted, we shouted. But they didn't listen to us. They gave us control. We, who live on the border fence, saw Hezbollah stretching the rope every day. Checking the IDF a little more. The patrols were conducted on the fence. We have become accustomed to the fact that small IDF forces are enough. Let intelligence warn and a wall stop Hezbollah.

The security concept collapsed in the south. The same concept that was supposed to protect our children in the north as well. The arrogance of the IDF was at its peak. We were told: "They won't touch civilians, they'll just stick a flag and within a few minutes we'll be here to protect you." Everything turned out to be empty words.

Every morning we woke up to the sound of hunters shooting from Lebanon, which sounded like company training. Detonation of mines on the fence. Molotov cocktails. Convoys of Hezbollah motorcycles. Off-road vehicles of terrorists. On the other hand, the IDF treated it as a disturbance of public order – they fired in the air, threw stun grenades, detonated non-lethal devices. Just don't wake up the Shiite bear. The state has shown weakness – not even a Hezbollah tent in Israeli territory has been evacuated.

The war in the north has not begun

A month has passed since Hezbollah brought Israel into the circle of fighting, and Israel refuses to attack. Thwart anti-tank squads, carefully hit Hezbollah positions. Working on the defensive to keep Hezbollah out of the equation. Nasrallah sets the tone, and the residents of the north are held captive by him.

While the IDF occupies the Gaza Strip and dismantles Hamas, our eyes are on the north. A month after the beginning of the Second Lebanon War, the IDF was already south of the Litani. The Dahiya neighborhood had already been wiped out and the war was about to end. Today, a month after the beginning of the campaign in the south, in the north it is far from beginning.

Residents of the fence will not be able to return home while Hezbollah's plan to conquer the Galilee remains in place, while the Radwan force remains south of the Litani. When the threat of sniper fire and anti-tank fire makes it impossible for us to raise children. The drive from home to kindergartens and school in Metula passes over the border fence, next to the fence, a stone's throw away. We will not sit and wait for Hezbollah to wake up and conquer the Galilee. Metula residents will take security into their own hands. Our houses mark the border. Our rifles will deter the residents of southern Lebanon and the terrorists and make it clear to them that the fence is off-limits.

Patience is running out

The residents of the north waited for the State of Israel to take responsibility for security. Patience is running out – and with it the realization that this will no longer happen. Two scenarios seem likely to exist. The first is the opening of a northern campaign only after the end in the south. This means that we will have to remain refugees for many more months to a year. The second scenario is the end of the campaign in the south without launching a campaign in the north. This means that we will have to find a new home far from the border.
