Highlights: The mini-cow, this new pet that's all the rage on TikTok. It's a TikTok fad that no one saw coming: getting a mini- cow and making it your pet. Small and cute, it is not made for indoor living. But more and more users of the Chinese social network, distorting the notion of pets, are buying one, or several, for the sole pleasure of liking. It's a TikTok fad that no one saw coming: getting a mini-cow and making it your pet. Small and cute, it is not made for indoor living. Let's take a look at the phenomenon.

Just imagine for a moment: enthroned in your living room, wandering indolently... A mini-cow. Then imagine that it's not a strange dream, but a trend that's gaining momentum on TikTok. Thus, for several months, many users have been posting videos of themselves with their miniature cows - a breed of XS cattle - as if they were a domestic animal like any other. But despite its cuteness, the mini-cow is not an indoor animal; This raises the question of yet another uproar from Internet users in search of notoriety, but also of the impact on the lives of these animals programmed to live outdoors.

You have to get past the first reaction that undoubtedly makes you find it to bite into, and see further: the mini-cow is just one of the latest illustrations of the great nonsense that reigns on TikTok. There are several breeds of these small cattle, such as the Highland Cattle, which comes from Scotland and more particularly from the Highlands, the miniature Angus, also Scottish, the Dwarf Zebu, from Sri Lanka and the Swedish Palsho. Coming from farms, located in particular in the United States, but also recently in France, in Normandy, they all measure a maximum of one meter, weigh from 100 to 130 kilos and are sold between 10,000 and 12,000 dollars (between 9,000 and 11,000 euros). But they remain, despite their appearance, farm animals, not meant to spend their day on a couch. However, more and more users of the Chinese social network, distorting the notion of pets, are buying one, or several, for the sole pleasure of liking.

And it works. You only have to type in the hashtags "tinycows" or "minicows" to understand it: hundreds of dedicated accounts have been created and the millions of views have often exceeded. On TikTok, there is even talk of "cow-fluencers", whose standard-bearer is @minimoos, a young American with more than 750,000 subscribers. Everywhere, the videos are mostly identical: an indoor setting – or a small enclosure for those who live in the countryside – and a cuddle therapy session, without us knowing what the little bovine thinks, who clearly has no say in it. Lovely moments of sharing, as innocuous as these excerpts suggest? For the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (the equivalent of our SPA), this is not the case. Questioned by the New York Times, his spokesperson urged farmers to sell their mini-cows only to people who would have a real appetite for these animals and the means to take care of them, because if TikTokers get tired of them, "there are few establishments that can accommodate them" afterwards.

Because once TikTokers understand that they have to take care of a bovine on a daily basis, many people get discouraged. Like their "big" counterparts, the mini-cows have to drink several dozen litres of water a day and eat hay, a resource that is difficult to find in the city. Not to mention homeowners living in urban areas, who have to let them roam around their apartments and clean up their droppings behind them. As the phenomenon is fairly recent, figures are lacking and the number of cattle that are abandoned is not yet known. But TikTokers' behavior with these little creatures has all the makings of love... cow.
