"The Rise of Skywalker": Decrease in Viewers | Israel today

"The rise of Skywalker" brought in far less than expected • This has led to criticism of Jay. Jay Abrams, who is alleged to have acted in a cowardly fashion

The reviews slaughter the new movie in the "Star Wars" series, and also in the box office is not something • While the movie put in $ 176 million at the weekend, it is less than predictions and less than its predecessors

  • Insufficient. From "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker"

"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," the ending part of the current movie trilogy, did not live up to projections (which predicted an opening of between $ 195 and $ 200 million) and grossed only $ 176 million in its first weekend.

Of course, this is an extraordinary amount, but not when compared to the $ 220 million previous movie, "The Last Jedi," or the $ 248 million that the first part of the trilogy, "The Force Awakens," put out. Meanwhile, "The Rise of Skywalker" experienced a dramatic drop in viewers from Friday to Saturday, and Saturday to Sunday - indicating dissatisfaction on the part of ticket buyers and does not bode well for the rest of the way.

The international arena, too, did not shine a light on the new film in question. Outside the US "Skywalker's Rise" recorded a 16% drop from the previous movie and currently stands at $ 198 million (compared to $ 250 million earmarked in the early forecasts). It's still too early to talk about the movie as a blockbuster failure, but let's just say if "Skywalker's Rise" Won't reach a billion dollars (and that's far from certain), heads are expected to roll down the halls of Disney's offices.

In contrast to the critically acclaimed "Last Day," Skywalker's Rise was received with mixed feelings and disappointment. The one who won most of the criticism is the screenwriter-director J. Jay Abrams, who got the reins from Ryan Johnson's hands (and also directed "The Force Awakens").

Against Abrams, it is alleged that it provided an expected finale that essentially recycles the original trilogy, and that cowardly succumbed to fan pressure, voicing a vocal protest against some of Johnson's screenwriting choices. Among other things, Abrams decided to minimize the role of Vietnamese-American actress Kelly Marie Tran, who suffered an unbearable flood of racist and misogynistic messages following her film work by the "fans" of the series, and make a central decision by Johnson regarding the identity of the Jedi Knight.

Since the re-launch of "Star Wars" in 2015, five films have been produced in total, with Disney's original plan being to release one new movie each year. After the poor box office performance of the spin-off movie "Solo", in 2018 it was decided to press the brakes for now and not produce new films in the near future. However, these days, Disney's streaming service "The Mandalorian," which is set in the "Star Wars" universe, is very successful, so you can be sure that the iconic universe created by George Lucas in 1977 has not yet said the final word.
