The situation is dramatic in the "Retirement and Geriatric Homes" nursing home in Paris, at 76 rue de Picpus (12th), which depends on the Rothschild group. According to our information, following the Covid-19 epidemic due to the coronavirus, the toll is very heavy: 16 people have died in the establishment, and 81 are currently positive for Covid-19. “We are all 100% mobilized in the face of this exceptional situation. We are doing everything we can, but the situation is very tough, ”we tell the establishment's management.
Among the staff of the establishment, twenty are positive at Covid-19. A psychological unit is organized on site to help the families of the many victims. This Ehpad is particularly large, because it accommodates 510 residents, who generally suffer from serious pathologies. A second building brings together 60 other residents, who also have significant health problems.
The vast majority of those who died are over 90 years of age. The youngest of the deceased is 75 years old, and suffered from Alzheimer's disease. The first death was recorded on March 11, and things accelerated thereafter. Despite the 24-hour mobilization of many doctors on site, the Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on these frail elderly people. "We are monitoring this matter very closely," says one to the ARS Ile-de-France.
This Ehpad is not the only one affected by the epidemic. An establishment in the Vosges had at least 20 deaths among these residents, Monday, March 23.
"The disaster is imminent in the Ehpad"
Despite this dramatic context, the only good news is that the number of new cases in the establishment is for the first time decreasing since the previous day.
“This terrible record shows that there is an urgent need to come to the aid of our elders even more. The government must realize that the catastrophe is imminent in the nursing homes, ”explains emergency doctor Patrick Pelloux. He suggests that "these sick and elderly people can have access to the drug chloroquine". "Why are we depriving them of this therapeutic possibility?" he asks.
