Kassel / Salzgitter: In summer, watermelons are a popular snack in the garden or on the beach. But some watermelons can contain harmful substances. 

Aldi-Nord * started a recall for mini watermelons from its range in early June 2020 . There may be residues of pesticides in it. The supermarket chain reports on its website.

The recall applies to 

  • Mini watermelon class 1
  • of the supplier Catman North GmbH
  • GGN 4052852232968

Aldi-Nord starts recall for mini watermelon: identification number shows contamination

GGN means GLOBALG.AP The 13-digit identification number confirms compliance with the GlobalG.AP standards for good agricultural practice. Only mini watermelons with GGN 4052852232968 contain harmful residues , according to Aldi-Nord . The recall does not apply to mini watermelons with a different GGN . They are harmless.

The mini watermelon with the corresponding GGN was not sold in all branches of Aldi-Nord, specifies the supermarket chain. The watermelons were sold exclusively in these branches of the companies:

  • Greven
  • Herten
  • Hesel
  • Lehrte-Sievershausen
  • Lingen
  • Radevormwald
  • Salzgitter
  • Weyhe.

Customers can check which company an Aldi branch belongs to on the Aldi website under "Branches and opening times".

Aldi-Nord has already taken the affected mini watermelons out of the range as a precaution in the interests of consumer protection. Customers should now check whether they have bought such a mini watermelon. On its website, Aldi-Nord warns against consuming the product. 

Customers who have such a mini watermelon are asked to return the product to the Aldi store. The purchase price will be refunded to the customer upon recall

Aldi-Nord assures that mini watermelons are not contaminated with another GGN and other products from the supplier "Catman North GmbH" and are suitable for consumption. You are not affected by the recall

Aldi-Nord apparently discovered the contamination of the product even during internal tests of the mini watermelon. The residues come from the plant protection product Oxamyl. 

This active ingredient is a colorless chemical compound with a sulphurous smell. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, no products with this crop protection product are currently approved.
