From Vesuvius to Etna by bicycle without assistance. The Southern Italy can be a cycling destination less known than the Alps and the Dolomites , but Juliana Buhring , the first woman to win the Guinness World Record to circumnavigate the world by bicycle , hopes to change that. The Two Volcano Sprint (2VS) is an unassisted cycling challenge that starts and ends on the two volcanoes symbol of southern Italy, Vesuvius and Etna. Juliana Buhring created the event together with Vito and Carlo Cinque of the hotel Il San Pietro di Positano, with the aim of promoting eco-sustainability and tourism in Southern Italy. The itinerary follows the Amalfi and Cilento coasts before going into the Apennines and finally crossing eastern Sicily . With just over 1,000 kilometers and more than 22,000 meters in altitude, the 2VS is an event created for stubborn cyclists with sturdy legs who want to face a new challenge. Participants must complete the fixed GPS route independently and without assistance, transporting their equipment and purchasing food, water, resources or accommodation where available.
The time limit for drawing up an official ranking is 110 hours , at the end of which a race at the end of the race will take place. There are no cash prizes or awards, but only the satisfaction of exceeding your limits, of exploring another part of this planet and helping to improve the lives of the people who live there. All participants have access to a GPS locator that updates their current position every 5 minutes on an online map available on www.twovolcanosprint.com and can be followed live. The Two Volcano Sprint is not just a cycling challenge. Thanks to sponsors who cover organizational costs, 100% of the registration fees are intended to finance a project, initiative or service that has a positive impact on nature conservation, environmental sustainability or climate action, while stimulating the economic growth of local communities throughout southern Italy.
Two Volcano Sprint, the race starts
The organization has decided to take advantage of the collaboration of A&C Motors of Castellamare di Stabia which has made available two very low emission vehicles. "With the wish - explain the organizers - that in the future, also thanks to this initiative and others that will come from it, that Southern Italy will be equipped with a greater number of charging columns so as to be able, in the immediate future, to acquire of electric vehicles ". The mayor of Herculaneum , Ciro Buonajuto , hosts the departure of the event and the mayor of Nicolosi , Angelo Pulv purchasers , awaits the runners on arrival. Both mayors are working closely with the organizers to ensure that participants are followed and have a personalized experience of hospitality, cuisine and culture of southern Italy.
The second edition of the Two Volcano Sprint sees the participation of some big names in the ultracycling scene, however it is always open to all cyclists who want to try their legs and luck in this new challenge. The balance of the balance generated by the 2VS of 2019 made it possible to stipulate a protocol of understanding between the Municipality of Agerola and Humanitas of Agerola for the food support of families without public assistance. 65 quintals of food were distributed by Humanitas. The second edition of the 2VS kicks off on 18 October from Ercolano.
