(ANSA) - NEW YORK, OCTOBER 16 - The border between the US and Canada will remain closed until the coronavirus situation is under control in the United States.

Prime Minister JustinTrudeau said this in an interview.

The closure agreement expires on October 21, but the Ottawa leader explained that his country is committed to keeping things the way they are.

"The US is not in a situation where we would feel comfortable reopening the borders," he said. "We will continue to make sure Canadian security comes first.

We see cases in the US and other parts of the world, and we must maintain controls. at the borders ".

Last week, 13 US states - including Alaska, Minnesota, Montana and North Dakota, which border Canada - broke their records for the number of new cases in a seven-day period.

Even Canada, although the infection rate is much lower than that of the US, is not immune from the second wave: in the last two weeks, according to government data, there have been almost 31,000 new positives and 372 deaths.

"I think this second wave is exhausting," admitted Trudeau, noting however that the positive side is that we now "know how to act in a more targeted way than last spring. We know what types of activities are most likely to spread the virus."
