(ANSA) - ROME, JANUARY 26 - Russian President Vladimir Putin has presented a bill to Parliament that would extend the New START nuclear treaty for five years.

"On January 26, 2021, Russia and the United States signed an agreement on the extension of the treaty", reads an explanatory note attached to the bill published on the website of the State Duma of the lower house.

For now, the agreement would actually only be verbal.

The note states that the two parties have "agreed in principle" to extend the new START for five years.

United States President Joe Biden said he was willing to renew the Start treaty on nuclear arsenals for five years but criticized the Tsar for Russian interference on US elections, Moscow's cyber attacks and alleged bounties for the killing of American soldiers in Afghanistan. And he expressed his "concern" over the poisoning of opposition leader Alexey Navalny and the crackdown on protests.

Finally, he confirmed the hard line on Ukraine. (HANDLE).
