This Sunday at 7.10, a KLM flight from Amsterdam is scheduled to land in Ezeiza, in which the first doses of the 1.9 million vaccines that the COVAX fund will deliver to Argentina will arrive between now and May.
There will be
218,000 doses
of the vaccine developed jointly by the University of Oxford and the AstraZeneca laboratory, which were produced in a company plant in South Korea and from there traveled to Europe, from where the distribution is made.
But as this newspaper learned,
another 900,000 doses of AstraZeneca
are expected to
arrive
after April 15
.
In this case, not by COVAX -the fund in which several United Nations organizations participate-, but by initiating the deliveries of the 22.4 million doses that the Argentine Government bought directly from the Swedish-British company and which were produced in the country.
In these vaccines, the local company mAbxience produces the active ingredient in Garin, which is exported to the northern hemisphere for packaging.
The termination agreement is with the Mexican laboratory Liomont, but these doses
come directly from an AstraZeneca plant in the United States
.
In addition, the arrival of a batch of
3.5 million units
also finished in the United States
is expected in May
, and from there the deliveries will escalate in volume to maintain a fluid flow until
completing the 22.4 million by spring.
.
In June it is estimated that about 5 million doses would arrive.
Logistical issues
Logistical details are still lacking on how the deliveries will be implemented, which will involve the entire region because AstraZeneca produces in Argentina and finishes in the North the vaccines of all the contracts it closed in Latin America, with the exception of Brazil.
There are 150 million doses that will be distributed throughout the region.
In some deliveries that the laboratory has made so far in other countries, a private courier was chosen.
It remains to be determined whether the doses will come to Argentina on Aerolineas Argentinas flights, such as the units that are going to be searched at this time in Moscow and Beijing from Sputnik V and Sinopharm respectively, or if it will be done with another airline, such as the delivery of the COVAX.
What is estimated is that, in different planes, the 3.5 million in May will all arrive at a close date, constituting
an important delivery in volume of units
.
As
Clarín
had published 10 days ago
, a lack of supplies for packaging in Mexico was added to regulatory delays in that country that delayed the start-up of the packaging process by Liomont at its Mexican plant.
This could jeopardize AstraZeneca's delivery schedule for which, to comply with the agreement with Argentina, the company
diverted half
of mAbxience
production
to the United States to finish the "vials" there, as the vaccines are called. packaged for distribution.
From Garín, an average of 6 million doses are dispatched per week.
More vaccines
This Friday, another 370,000 doses of component 1 of the Sputnik V vaccine arrived in Ezeiza, with which the country has received 5,250,540 doses so far.
In addition to the 218,000 from AstraZeneca that arrive on Sunday from COVAX, it is expected that on Monday morning another Aerolineas Argentinas flight will depart to Russia to look for more vaccines than those produced by the Gamaleya Institute and on Tuesday another would leave for China to bring more by Sinopharm.
According to the
Public Vaccination Monitor
, 4,197,945 vaccines have been distributed so far, and 3,474,415 have been applied.
2,824,344 people and 650,071 received the first dose, both.
