(ANSA) - VENICE, 03 JUL - Welcomed by a roar and a long applause, a moved Krysztof Warlikowski today received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement from the Venice Biennale - Theater. The Polish director explained that the award "is not a crowning achievement", but "an obligation to continue my journey".
The president Roberto Cicutto reiterated that it is the reason that led the Foundation to reward the artist :. "This is precisely the reason why he continues to give us his research - he said - his thought and his talent". There was no lack, on the part of Cicutto, the desire to further raise the bar of the Biennale: "we are again in attendance, this is the first jewel we want to present. We are happy,but we know we want to do even better than we have done so far. "
At the time of the award, a funny curtain took place between Cicutto and Warlikowski: "because of the Covid - said the president of the Biennale - he has to take it on his own", followed by a roar from the audience and a few tears from the director, who it is made available to photographers posing with the Golden Lion.
After the usual thanks, in Italian, the artist remembered a member of his team, in English: "this honor came at a special moment for the theater, an unprecedented moment, in which a member, Sigmund Milanovich, died of Covid before the before my Odyssey, this award is also for you ". Then a reflection on the concept of memory: "with Covid, we asked how much we have lost, we live in a present where the younger we are the more immersed we are in a virtual dimension of the present.
