Memory gap

A good year ago, Ethiopian government troops attacked the breakaway region of Tigray.

A few days ago, a memorial service for fallen soldiers took place in the capital Addis Ababa.

Meanwhile, the conflict continues to worsen.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed wants to continue the fight against the Tigray rebels with undiminished severity.

Two million people have been displaced because of the civil war, and hundreds of thousands are at risk of starvation.

Treasure trove of hopelessness

A man searches for valuable items at the Truitier landfill in the Cite Soleil district of Port-au-Prince.

When he finds something, he tries to sell it in Haiti's capital.

The Caribbean country is in a deep crisis.

Since the controversial head of state Jovenel Moïse was murdered in his house in July, the country, marked by crime and poverty, has threatened to plunge into even deeper political chaos.

Spirit cult

The Day of the Dead is celebrated in Haiti at the beginning of November.

The voodoo spirits Baron Samedi and Gede are honored at the national cemetery in Port-au-Prince.

All over the country, believers go to cemeteries and offer sacrifices to the deceased in order to please them.

Voodoo has been officially recognized as a religion in Haiti since 2004.

Pale as death

To look like the dead, voodoo supporters smear talcum powder on their faces during a ceremony at Haiti's National Cemetery in Port-au-Prince.

By dancing and singing, many bring themselves into a state of trance in order to immerse themselves in the realm of the spirits and to come into contact with them.

Friendly facade

On a press tour, the former police officer Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier visits a barracks district in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince.

He warmly greets a little boy.

But the facade is deceptive.

The former civil servant is the leader of the G9 coalition, an association of nine gangs who are up to mischief in Port-au-Prince.

Cherizier is said to be responsible for numerous massacres in the city.

Vaccine skeptics protest

In New York, corona vaccinations will be mandatory for all city employees.

That doesn't find support everywhere.

Numerous vaccine skeptics gathered in front of the town hall this week to protest against the directive.

Another problem is that the US health authority CDC recently approved vaccinations for children aged five and over.

Future without coal?

While it may be possible for some industrialized nations to say goodbye to coal, it is not so easy for developing countries.

In the Indian state of Jharkhand, the extremely climate-damaging raw material secures jobs for millions of people.

The dead goat has to cross the finish line

Buzkaschi is a popular equestrian game in Afghanistan.

It's about prestige - and about who brings a goat carcass to the judge.

In the centuries-old game, which is said to go back to Genghis Khan, dozens of riders fight for the carcass of a goat.

The winner is whoever maneuvers the dead animal across the playing field around a flag and then drops it in a marked field in front of the grandstand.

There are usually no permanent teams.

This picture was taken in the Samangan province of Afghanistan.

Buzkaschi is not only played in Afghanistan, but also in countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Travel destination: rainbow

Whether the residents of the Faroe Islands are still impressed by the sight of grazing sheep and rough seas while driving is an open question.

But when such a rainbow pops up, and when you press the accelerator you might imagine being able to drive through it - that must also be magical for someone who knows Road 10 at Skálafjørður well.

The approximately 14 km long fjord cuts deeply into the island of Eysturoy, it is the longest fjord in the Faroe Islands.

Salt bank

This photo was taken with the help of a drone. It shows two people walking in the Dead Sea.

At first glance, the ground you are walking on looks like a sandbar.

But they are salt deposits near En Bokek in Israel.

The Dead Sea is the deepest lake on earth, it is more than 400 meters below sea level.

Its water level has been falling for years.
