(ANSA) - ROME, 07 NOV - In these days he is putting the finishing touches on his first film "solo", once again inspired by Pirandello and his homonymous short story "Leonora addio".

He wanted it in black and white, as in an ideal return to the beginnings of that cinema, signed by Paolo & Vittorio Taviani who, since the 1950s, drew an ideal borderline between the magisterium of Neorealism and a new realist cinema, deliberately ideological and poetic at the same time. .

Paolo Taviani turns 90 on 8 November.

Born in San Miniato, near Pisa, from a middle-class family, with a father who is a lawyer and anti-fascist, the Taviani Brothers arrive in Rome with a very clear idea in their minds: making movies, influenced by the discovery of "Paisà" (Rossellini is the declared master ), excited by "Bicycle Thieves". From their diary were born films that have marked the history of cinema such as the prophetic "Subversives" about the end of blind trust in real communism and the visionary "Under the sign of the scorpion" on horseback with the repression in Czechoslovakia; they anticipated the failure of the revolutionary utopia by drawing on the history of the Risorgimento with "San Michele had a rooster" and "Allosanfan". In 1977 they won the Palme d'Or with "Padrepadrone"and 8 years later they triumph again in Cannes with their greatest success, "La notte di San Lorenzo" (Special Jury Prize). Their meeting with Pirandello and Lenovelle of "Kaos" dates back to 1984, followed in 1998 by "Tu ridi"; in 2012 they won the Berlin Film Festival with "Cesare must die". The latest collaboration dates back to 2017 with "A private matter" that Paolodirects alone, while his brother Vittorio is forced to stay at home due to the illness that would have taken him away on April 15 three years ago.Cesare must die.     Paolo Taviani likes to define himself even today as "half a director" because half of him is not on the set, he feels "an employee of the cinema because after all Vittorio and I have always worked with certain rules and a certain rhythm. Films change, I a lot less and I keep thinking that we do this job because if the cinema has this strength, to reveal to ourselves the same truth, then it is worthwhile to test ourselves ".
