With her diaphanous skin, her wide-rimmed glasses and her blue eyes hidden behind a heavy lock of hair, she would rather look like a discreet teenager and a little uncomfortable in her skin.
However, if there is a lesson to be learned from this fiction, it is that appearances should not be trusted.
"Inventing Anna", a new event series by Shonda Rhimes, the creator of "Grey's Anatomy", "Murder", "The Bridgerton Chronicle", posted on Netflix, tells the true story of Anna Delvey, of her true name Anna Sorokin.
In 2017, the 26-year-old fooled banks, stores, hotels, and New York City's elite, scamming them out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
His technique?
Passing herself off as the daughter of wealthy German collectors, and claiming to be about to inherit a fortune of $60 million.
She actually grew up in Russia, south of Moscow with her parents in a modest background before moving to Germany at the age of 16.
Infernal spiral
She has a goal for which she struggles and invents all her lies: to create the Anna Delvey Foundation, a space of more than 4,000 m2 in the heart of Manhattan, dedicated to contemporary art and design.
To obtain a loan, the scammer falsifies documents.
To all her contacts, between an opening in the galleries, a European Fashion Week and a weekend in Ibiza or Miami, she says that she will reimburse later.
Without ever doing it.
Infernal spiral with no possible return.
She flies, lies with such aplomb and self-confidence that no one doubts.
The story is fascinating, of course.
But it all starts slowly.
We follow a journalist, Vivian, who decides to investigate this strange young woman.
Anna Chlumsky does a lot (too much?) to give substance to her character, who moves heaven and earth to advance in her research.
The character of Anna, played by Julia Garner, plays her role of the mysterious girl perfectly, but we quickly get tired of her wanderings through the Big Apple to raise funds or her travels to the four corners of the planet.
Everything works, but remains a bit superficial and unsurprising.
Pity.
