Expo: the beautiful and strange Mexico of Graciela Iturbide

INTERVIEW – The great photographer presents her first retrospective at the Cartier Foundation in Paris. Meeting with an artist less surrealist than it seems.


Meeting Graciela Iturbide, 79, legend of Mexican photography, is a great moment and a breath of fresh air.

A very small woman, slender, nervous, smiling, clinging to her cigarettes, she has the beautiful simplicity of well-bred people and the curiosity of adventurers.

This poet of the image was shown at the Rencontres d'Arles, a little at the Center Pompidou.

But the Cartier Foundation offers him, until May 29, his first French retrospective, “Graciela Iturbide, Heliotropo 37”, in reference to the address of his studio in Mexico City, in the Coyoacan district, that of Frida Kahlo.
