As a player, Mario Basler won the DFB Cup with Werder Bremen and was German champion with Bayern Munich.
As a coach, "Super Mario" has not hit the big time.
But who knows, maybe he will take his new club to new heights?
On March 1, Basler becomes a coach at the district league club SC Türkgücü Osnabrück – because of a lost bet.
As the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" and the "kicker" report, the 53-year-old had bet with a club member that he would start as a coach with the team from the district league C if he lost a squash match against his betting partner.
And so it happened.
Basler lost and will start as a coach at Türkgücü next Tuesday.
Basler should stay for a year and a half
"It's an honor for us that Mario Basler is volunteering with us as a coach," said Türkgücü board member Caner Ciftci, according to the "Neuer Osnabrücker Zeitung".
Sports director Samet Sakinmaz even told the "kicker" that Basler would stay with the club for a year and a half.
As a professional, Basler was active for Werder Bremen, Bayern Munich and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, among others, and he was also a German international.
After the end of his playing career, Basler trained, among others, Jahn Regensburg, Eintracht Trier, Wacker Burghausen and Rot-Weiss Oberhausen.
Born in the Palatinate, he has been living in Osnabrück for several years.
Is he looking forward to the new football challenge?
Or whether he slept in SC Türkgücü Osnabrück bed linen as a child?
An official press conference is still pending.
