The exact date is still eagerly awaited.

In a press release published this Friday, the rector of the Great Mosque of Paris, Chems-eddine Hafiz, announces what the dates of Ramadan should be.

"The Great Mosque of Paris informs the faithful that the 1st day of the month of Chaabane 1443/H corresponds to this Friday, March 4", he writes initially.

This month of Chaabane allows Muslims to prepare spiritually for the next month "of fasting and worship that will be the month of Ramadan".

The press release continues by announcing, already, "that the Night of Doubt allowing to determine the beginning of the month of Ramadan 2022 will take place on Friday April 1st".

The fasting period should therefore extend from April 2 to May 2.

The head of the Great Mosque of Paris does not fail, in his press release, to call for peace.

"In these hours when peace is in danger, the imams of the Great Mosque of Paris and I invite all Muslims in France to multiply invocations, during this month of Chaabane, for the end of armed conflicts. and so that fraternity regains the hearts of men,” asks Chems-eddine Hafiz.

Five to six million Muslims

France has between five and six million practicing and non-practicing Muslims, according to several studies on the subject (Pew Research Center, Institut Montaigne, Insee, Ined), which makes Islam the country's second religion.

And makes the French Muslim community the first Muslim community in Europe.

During Ramadan, one of the pillars of Islam, believers are asked to abstain from drinking, eating, smoking and having sexual relations, from dawn - as soon as one can "distinguish a white thread from a black thread” says the Koran – until sunset.

Fasting is prescribed for pubescent Muslims, but exemptions are provided for travellers, the sick, the elderly, pregnant women or women who have just given birth.

Compensation is possible for people prevented or exempted (fasting carried out later, donations to the needy, etc.).
