Herzog in Istanbul synagogue, 'historic' visit concludes

Israeli President Isaac Herzog today concluded his visit to Turkey - the first made by an Israeli leader since 2008 - with a meeting with the Jewish community at the Nevè Shalom synagogue in Istanbul, after which he returned to his homeland. (HANDLE)


(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, MARCH 10 - Israeli President IsaacHerzog today concluded his visit to Turkey - the first by an Israeli leader since 2008 - with a meeting with the Jewish community in the Nevè Shalom synagogue in Istanbul, after which he return home.

"Yesterday I met President Recep Tayyp Erdogan during a historic visit to Ankara," said Herzog.

"We had a good, open and honest conversation. I told him that I believe that all of us, the children of all religions of the Middle East, must live in peace. He agreed with me, and he also thinks that regional stability is important."

With an allusion to the Abrahamic Agreements - with which Israel extended its relations to Gulf countries - Herzog added: "


   Herzog then paid tribute to the memory of the victims of terrorist attacks that took place in that synagogue in 1986 and 2003. "We must commit ourselves - he affirmed - to an indefatigable fight against racism, anti-Semitism and hatred of our neighbor".
