The Excellence and Creativity Authority announced today the stages and rules of participation in the National School Debating Championship for 2022, during a press conference at the Reda Saeed Conference Center at the University of Damascus.

Engineer Hala Dakkak, head of the authority, confirmed that the main objective of school debates is to spread the culture and method of dialogue based on argument, evidence and documented scientific proof among the youth segment, indicating that school debates are a door that opens horizons for students towards a set of global and local issues that they must learn through reading and reading.

Engineer Thaer Laham, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Excellence and Creativity Authority and head of the Scientific Committee for School Debates in the Olympiad, indicated that an introductory guide to the debates will be published in addition to training and arbitration guides for debates. A match to follow the debate and award marks to each team according to “style, content and strategy” to determine the winning team for the debate.

Engineer Laham pointed out that a series of courses for preparing and accrediting debate trainers will be held in the governorates to include the largest possible number of trainers wishing to do this task, in addition to empowering courses for debate judges, indicating that this year's championship is characterized by an increase in the number of teams wishing to participate.

Engineer Lynn Qassem, Director of the Scientific Olympiad at the Excellence and Creativity Authority, indicated that the Authority seeks to activate debate clubs in the schools of outstanding students and its own internal system, given the remarkable success achieved by these schools in the championship last year, indicating that the Authority seeks in cooperation with the Ministry of Education to open more debate clubs in Outstanding Schools, where there are currently 25 schools.

Annie Koshian, member of the Scientific Committee for School Debates and representative of the Syrian Trust for Development, noted the role of school debates in developing the capacities of young people in scientific and personal terms and increasing the competencies they possess by teaching them how to search for information related to the issues we live in and not hesitate to express their opinions according to their convictions, considering that publishing School debate culture is not only through training, but also through continuous practice within the debate clubs in schools and beacons of honesty.

Alaa Ayoub, Secretary of the Academic Committee for School Debates, spoke about the “peace challenges” of school teams and lighthouses aspiring to improve their positions in the rankings at the national level.

The National School Debating Championship for 2022 is scheduled to be held in two phases.. The first is at the governorate level during the period between 1-5 June and will be held in 3 geographical gatherings: Damascus (Damascus, Rural Damascus, Quneitra, Daraa and As-Suwayda) and Lattakia (Latakia, Tartous and Homs and Hama) and the Aleppo Cluster (Aleppo Governorate and its countryside).

During the first stage, the teams of each group will be divided into several groups, and the teams of each group will play among themselves in a league manner from one stage, where each team competes with the rest of the teams of its group. Its competitions in Damascus during the period between June 19 and 23, with the participation of the qualified teams from the first stage.
