Former Colombian football star Freddy Rincon, captain of the national team and midfielder of Naples and Real Madrid, died in Cali, in southwestern Colombia, where he was hospitalized after suffering a car accident two days earlier.

The 55-year-old former player was hospitalized last Monday in critical condition after a violent collision between a bus and the van in which he was traveling.

"Despite all the efforts made by our medical team, patient Freddy Eusebio Rincon Valencia died today," said the Imabanaco clinic in Cali, where he was being treated.

Nicknamed "El Coloso" ("the colossus"), Rincon was one of the stars of the Colombian national team during the 1990 World Cup in Italy and was part of the Colombian golden generation that qualified for three consecutive World Cups (1990, 1994 and 1998).

He has played for Real Madrid (Spain), Naples (Italy), Palmeiras and Corinthians (Brazil) and America de Cali (Colombia).
