Grain and flour prices continue to rise because of the Ukraine war.

Bakeries therefore have to raise the prices for bread and other baked goods enormously.

Kassel – The prices for raw materials, including grain, flour and yeast, are currently reaching a new high due to the Ukraine conflict.

Nationwide, bakeries and baked goods manufacturers are directly affected by the price increase.

With a view to the future, the farmers' association announced that a loaf of bread could soon cost ten euros.

The Handelsblatt reported on this.

Not only important groceries are becoming scarce at Aldi, Lidl & Co. because of the war in Ukraine, but also the world market prices for wheat, rye & Co. are currently increasing enormously.

After all, Russia and Ukraine are among the most important and largest wheat producers.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, manufacturers have had to spend significantly more money to produce baked goods.

And customers will soon have to dig deeper and deeper into their wallets to be able to buy bread or a few rolls.

Consequences of the Ukraine war: Prices for bread & Co. rise enormously

Thomas Bode, a master baker from Thuringia, told Focus Online that he recently had to raise the prices of his products by around 20 percent because of rising costs.

It is usually the manufacturing costs, including labor costs, that make up the largest part of the price.

But according to Bode, that has already changed: "The raw material and energy costs are now at the same level as the manufacturing costs," he told Focus Online.

The fact that baked goods are now increasing does not only have negative effects: "This gives baked goods the value they should have," emphasized the master baker.

They are bought in a more targeted manner and less thrown away.

But in order to enable everyone, regardless of their financial situation, to buy bakery products, Bode offers its customers bread from the day before.

This is then available at half price.

Bakeries in the Kassel district are also currently asking their customers for understanding due to the high bread prices.

Will bread soon cost ten euros?

Expert gives assessment

But could a loaf of bread actually be sold over the counter for a whopping ten euros soon?

Daniel Schneider, General Manager of the Central Association of the German Bakery Trade, has given an assessment of this.

“The farmers produce the wheat, the bakers bake the bread.

It is the latter who have to calculate the prices based on their cost structure," Schneider told Handelsblatt.

Since the costs for energy, personnel and production are also increasing, numerous companies are currently having to review and adjust their calculations.

"But we're still a long way from paying ten euros for a piece of bread," says Schneider.

In many regions, however, a loaf already costs around four euros and could become even more expensive in the coming weeks.

In addition, there are strong price increases for groceries in the supermarket - but Rewe would like to take a customer-friendly special path.
