(ANSA) - CATANIA, MAY 28 - A newborn with the umbilical cord still attached, wrapped in a blanket, was found by the police in a basket in via Rametta in Catania.
His health conditions are considered good by the doctors who examined him.
The carabinieri of the Catania Nucleoradiomobile were found to find the newborn. They intervened after reporting by a passerby to the operations center of the provincial command via 112. The basket was in a populated area of the city behind a dilapidated wall.
The area is accessible to anyone.

The little boy was immediately looked after by the carabinieri who, after wrapping him in another clean blanket provided by a local resident, placed him in the car in service awaiting the arrival of the 118 doctors.
The newborn was then taken by ambulance to the Garibaldi Nesima hospital in Catania.
The doctors, after the first visit, noted the excellent state of health and arranged, however, as a precaution, to be admitted to the Neonatology ward where he will remain under observation.
Investigations are underway to identify the mother and the perpetrator of the abandonment.
