High summer temperatures of up to 40 degrees: the DWD forecasts the warmest day of the week for Thursday.

But cooling is also in sight.

Frankfurt/Offenbach – After cooling off a bit in the meantime, the heat is back in Germany.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), up to 39 degrees can be expected in the coming days.

The conurbations in Hesse, for example, are particularly likely to be hit, because the experts from Offenbach are also expecting tropical nights there.

This means that the temperatures should not fall below the 20 degree mark in many places, even at night.

While the thermometer rises to 37 degrees on Wednesday (August 3), the hottest day of the week is expected for Thursday (August 4) - with temperatures of up to 39 degrees, reports the DWD.

Meteorologist Marco Manitta therefore advises: "Drink enough, avoid heat in the midday and afternoon hours and keep the apartment as cool as possible."

Weather in Germany: Heat with temperatures around 40 degrees on Thursday

An official heat warning for a wide strip across Germany, which extends to Hamburg in the north and Stuttgart in the south, has already been issued.

It is currently valid for Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

However: the weather will cool down from Thursday afternoon for north-west Germany.

Then, however, thunderstorms are to be expected with all their negative consequences: heavy rain, hail and gusts of wind with severe weather potential threaten according to the DWD.

On Friday (5 August) it won't get any warmer than 27 degrees there.

Temperatures in Germany are expected to rise again to almost 40 degrees on Thursday (August 3).

The situation is different in the south-east of the country.

There, below the Mannheim-Berlin line, the weather remains midsummer.

The thermometer will rise another 30 to 38 degrees on Friday, before showers and heavy thunderstorms will push the temperatures below 30 degrees here too.

The DWD has published heat warnings for Wednesday (3 August).

Weather in Germany: What is the reason for the current heat wave?

The reason for the current heat wave in Germany is a high that is moving very slowly.

It "shovels" new hot air of tropical origin from the south-west towards Central Europe.

The DWD says: "Hot air, unimpeded radiation and a weak wind lead to a particularly strong feeling of heat during the day.

If the air mass is also humid, as in the case of the inflow of maritime tropical air, the pollution intensifies further.”

Bitter side effect of the current drought in Germany: According to the DWD forecast, the risk of forest fires will increase to the highest levels 4 and 5 by Thursday.

Apart from the thunderstorms with local heavy rain, no widespread rain is in sight, so the drought remains a major problem, explains Manitta.
