To celebrate its 125th anniversary, the Swiss Farmers' Union fried a giant rösti, setting a world record by its own account.
The traditional Swiss dish of grated potatoes was prepared in a 13.7 square meter pan in the shape of a Swiss cross on the Bundesplatz in Bern on Monday.
This surpassed the previous record from the city of Thun, also in Switzerland, from 1994 by three square meters, explained farmer president Markus Ritter.
Also potatoes from Liechtenstein in the court
Rösti originally comes from the German-speaking part of Switzerland - the language border to the French-speaking part of Switzerland is therefore also known as "Röstigraben".
In order to symbolically overcome the cultural and culinary differences, the potatoes required for the giant rösti were brought to Bern from all cantons of Switzerland, according to the farmers' association - potatoes from Liechtenstein were also boiled.
