Quentin Tarantino criticizes Marvel movies: "Captain America is the star, not the actors"

As a teenager he devoured the comics, but Quentin Tarantino thinks little of the Marvel films. Marvel hero actor Simu Liu contradicts the director: Old Hollywood "was white as hell".

It's been a long time since his most recent film: "Once upon a Time in Hollywood" was released in cinemas in 2019 and was a great success.

Since then, Quentin Tarantino has published two books, published in German by Kiepenheuer & Witsch: first a novel version of »Es war ein in Hollywood«, and now a film historical work, »Cinema Speculation«.

Tarantino's non-fiction, personally colored, focuses on 1970s Hollywood, on films he saw in Los Angeles cinemas as a young man.

But if you can talk to him about it, it makes sense to ask him for comparisons with the film scene of the present.

At least that's what Tom Segura did, who guest-starred Quentin Tarantino on the podcast 2 Bears, 1 Cave.

There Tarantino spoke of a "marvelization of Hollywood" with the result that there were no longer any real movie stars.

"All these actors became known for playing these characters," Variety magazine quoted Tarantino as saying, "But they're not movie stars, are they?

Captain America is the star.

Or Thor is the star.« He is by no means the first to notice this and he doesn't blame the actor for it either.

As late as 2005, an actor who starred in a film with as much success as today's contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have become an absolute star, according to Tarantino: "Sandra Bullock was in 'Speed' and everyone thought she was great in it.

Everyone wanted to see her in other films too.

Today we want this guy to keep playing Wolverine or whatever."

At 20, Tarantino would have loved Marvel movies

Quentin Tarantino emphasized in the interview that he doesn't hate the Marvel films, he just doesn't particularly like them.

"I collected Marvel comics like a maniac as a kid," said the director, "if those movies had come out when I was in my twenties, I would have loved them."

Today, at almost 60, he can no longer gain much from them.

In the 1970s, they would also have been films among other films: "Today they seem to be the only films that still cause any excitement among their fans and also in the studios." He has a problem with that.

Tarantino's lawsuit follows similar voices from the Hollywood establishment.

Martin Scorsese in particular has repeatedly criticized contemporary superhero cinema.

One of the actors addressed by Tarantino has since spoken up, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu, who portrays Marvel superhero Shang Chi, tweeted, "If Tarantino and Scorsese were the sole gatekeepers to movie stardom, I never would have had the opportunity to be in a $400 million movie the to play the leading role.«

He admires the men as film geniuses and auteur filmmakers, Liu continued.

"But I'm proud to work for a studio that makes an ongoing effort to increase diversity on screen - by creating heroes who empower and inspire people from every community around the world." To the times glorified by Tarantino related, Liu wrote: »I loved the ›Golden Age‹ too.

But it was white as hell.”

Quentin Tarantino has announced that he only wants to make one more feature film - ten is a good number.

His nine films to date have repeatedly quoted genre subjects.

For example, "Kill Bill" and "Kill Bill 2" referred to Asian martial arts films and thrillers.
