Dog wanders around on the A1 motorway for hours after an accident

A Belgian shepherd broke his leash after a traffic accident and triggered a rescue operation lasting several hours on the A1 near Bremen. Police and drivers tried to catch the frightened animal.

A dog straying along the freeway triggered an hours-long rescue operation on Boxing Day – but all the help was in vain.

After a traffic accident, the animal ripped off the leash of a participant and wandered around on the A1 between the Posthausen and Bockel junctions near Bremen on both directional lanes, the police said.

The first reports were received by the Sittensen motorway police around 10 a.m.

Traffic even had to be brought to a temporary standstill.

But all attempts to lure and capture the dog were unsuccessful, according to the police.

“The dog wouldn't let anyone within 100 meters of him and repeatedly threatened to flee onto the roadway.

During the escape, the dog crossed the entire autobahn several times, miraculously unharmed, in both directions.« By 4:00 p.m., the Lüneburg control center had already received around 100 emergency calls.

"Another danger was the well-intentioned but highly dangerous behavior of some road users," criticized the police.

They therefore went on foot onto the motorway to capture the frightened Belgian shepherd.

Veterinary practices were also involved in the rescue operation.

Finally, experts wanted to try their luck with a live animal trap.

According to the police, all measures had to be canceled around 4:30 p.m. – the dog died in a collision with a vehicle.
