Later she can go into the garden.

If you forget the ginger root you bought and store it in a bright place, the root can start to germinate quickly, especially in spring.

Instead of throwing them away, growing ginger is also an interesting alternative, because you can even harvest new tubers in autumn.

You can also specifically bring a tuber to germinate.

Or several.

Basically, ginger can be grown in a similar way to potatoes.

If you put the tuber, or rather the rhizome, in the ground in spring, you can probably dig up your first tubers after nine months.

All you need is a ginger root in organic quality, normal potting soil and a planter with a diameter of about 30 centimeters.

In any case, the ginger should have vegetation nodes from which the plant will later sprout.

It is ideal when these budding buds are already more pronounced.

The pot should have drainage holes to avoid waterlogging.

How to grow a ginger plant:

  • Cut the ginger into five centimeter pieces and place in a glass of water overnight.

  • Place two to three of the ginger pieces in the pot with soil so that the buds are facing up and cover with a little soil.

  • Pour in the ginger and place the pot in a bright place for several weeks.

Keep the soil evenly moist, for example you can cover the pot with cling film.

  • As soon as the first shoots appear, the plant continues to be watered regularly until green bamboo-like sprouts appear, which later grow a good meter high.

If they are still small, you can put the ginger in a larger pot and put it in a sunny place, after May also on the balcony.

  • After about nine months, the leaves turn yellow and dry up.

Then it's time to harvest the new underground tubers.

If the tuber has already formed sprouts, you have already shortened the path of germination and can divide them into pieces and place them directly in a larger pot with soil and water them.

Ginger likes temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius and can get some vegetable fertilizer every few weeks.

From around mid-May after the ice saints, you can also place the plant on the terrace or plant it in a bed in the garden - a raised bed or greenhouse are also suitable.

Here, too, the plant regularly tolerates some organic fertilizer from around June.
