A 58-year-old woman died and a 30-year-old man was seriously injured after they fell during a hike in the Apuan Alps.

Sast explained it yesterday evening on Monte Cavallo, between Massa Carrara and Lucca.

The man has a reserved prognosis.

According to Sast, the two, who had two dogs with them, one of which died falling down the valley, had traveled the north ridge of Monte Cavallo, which starts from the Foce di Cardeto and heads up to the summit, in the municipality di Minucciano, "a mountaineering route that is not difficult" but "not trivial".

The rescue operation involved the Lucca station of the Alpine and speleological rescue of Tuscany, activated around 10.45 pm, because the 58-year-old, originally from the Garfagnana, and the thirty-year-old were missing on Monte Cavallo, the second peak of the Apuan Alps.

The woman's husband, explains Sast, via the smartphone app provided the rescuers with the last position, i.e. within the 'lucchesi canal' on the north-east side of Mount Cavallo, in the municipality of Minucciano.

The technicians from Lucca immediately found the thirty-year-old at the base of the wall, in an advanced state of hypothermia, with a back injury and various grazes on his face.

The man was stabilized, packed and transported to the valley where the ambulance arrived from Castelnuovo Garfagnana with the doctor was waiting.

After arriving at the Castelnuovo Garfagnana hospital, the thirty-year-old was transferred by air ambulance to the Pisa hospital where he was hospitalized with a reserved prognosis.

The rescue team then continued the progression of the slope finding the woman's body in correspondence with a boulder, approximately in the middle of the channel itself.

The fall occurred from the north crest of Monte Cavallo, Sast estimates a fall of about 150-200 meters.

The team transported the body downstream and then via the Alpine Rescue vehicle to the Gorfigliano camp.

The magistrate ordered the autopsy.

The surviving dog got stuck on a grassy ledge.

The route taken by the excursions is not "difficult but absolutely non-trivial and not to be tackled with inadequate footwear",
