Thirty-four rockets were fired from Lebanon towards Israel
, of which 25 were intercepted by the missile defense system and five landed on Israeli territory.
The military spokesman said, adding that the location of the remaining 4 has yet to be identified.
The official Lebanese news agency later reported shelling by Israeli artillery after the rockets were fired, but
the Israeli military claimed that Israel did not respond in Lebanon after rockets were fired at the Jewish state
.
The military spokesman added that Palestinian factions linked to Hamas were responsible for the rocket fire from Lebanon.
The army is investigating whether Iran is involved
and in any case holds Lebanon responsible for what is happening on its territory.
The military spokesman also reported that mortar rounds were fired at Metulla, an Israeli town in Upper Galilee.
And he added that, after searching the ground, their fragments were found.
There is no news of victims or damage, but the population of Metulla has been ordered to enter the shelters or protected rooms of their homes.
UN Secretary General
Antonio Guterres condemned the rocket attacks from Lebanon on Israel, asking "all actors to exercise maximum restraint".
This was stated by his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric who then insisted on the need "to avoid any unilateral action that could lead to a further escalation of the situation".
"We condemn the launch of rockets from Lebanon and Gaza," spokesman for the US State Department
, Vedant Patel,
stressed when speaking to the media .
"Our commitment to Israel's security is strong and we recognize Israel's legitimate right to defend itself against any form of aggression," he added.
Behind the rockets fired from southern Lebanon are
"Palestinian factions linked to Hamas".
This was claimed by Israeli security sources quoted by the media at the end of a security meeting at the Defense Ministry with Minister Yoav Gallant.
Analysts have also argued, however, that an attack of this magnitude could not have been carried out without the assent of Hezbollah.
The UN mission (Unifil)
in southern Lebanon, which includes a thousand Italian soldiers, described the escalation of violence between Israel and Lebanon in the last few hours against the background of tensions in Jerusalem and Gaza as "very serious".
In a Unifil statement quoted by the Beirut media it is stated that the commander in chief of the UN mission, General Aroldo Lazaro, is in close contact with the authorities of Lebanon and Israel.
"The situation is extremely serious and Unifil calls for calm and to avoid escalation".
After the missile attack
from Lebanon towards Israel, the Italian soldiers of the UN mission of Unifil entered the shelter of the bunkers of their bases.
The procedure, as far as we know, would have taken place at the disposal of the military authorities of the Unifil Command.
Even the troops who were patrolling at that moment are sheltered in the first useful base available to them.
