(ANSA) - ROME, APRIL 14 - "We are concerned about the concentrations of unaccompanied foreign minors in certain Municipalities. Mechanisms are needed to avoid these concentrations otherwise the situation becomes unmanageable".
This was declared by the mayor of Prato and ANCI delegate for Immigration, Matteo Biffoni.
"We have been asking for urgent measures for two years - explains Biffoni - to address the issue of the serious situation of unaccompanied foreign minors tracked down and in charge of the Municipalities. The first time we wrote to Minister Lamorgese, it was April 2021, until December 2022, when we delivered an articulated document to Minister Piantedosi, to once again represent the situation to the Government".
Recalling how in the last three years the reports of unaccompanied foreign minors present in Italy have tripled, going from over 6,000 in February 2021 to almost 20,000 in the same month in 2023, the mayor reiterates that Anci "has raised the issue every time with concrete proposals and immediately operable. We no longer know how to say it."
"As the mayor Beppe Sala said yesterday when speaking of the emergency in Milan - Biffoni underlines again - mechanisms must be activated urgently to avoid concentrations on the territory of a few municipalities, making the phenomenon unmanageable. The first of these mechanisms - the mayor of Prato remarks again - is the Sai network, which however is now constantly saturated. For this reason, Anci has asked at every opportunity that the capacity for unaccompanied foreign minors be expanded. We also requested it during the so-called dl Cutro conversion but we have just learned that this proposal was still a rejected in Parliament.A proposal is therefore rejected which is an essential response to the needs of the Municipalities,while proceeding with always emergency solutions on a lasting phenomenon that should be managed with structural measures".
