(ANSA) - TUNIS, 10 MAY - It would be 4 dead, including the bomber, and nine wounded the toll of the attack launched last night against the synagogue of Ghriba, on the island of Djerba, in Tunisia, where a ritual was underway during a pilgrimage in which numerous foreigners also participated.
According to the Tunisian Interior Ministry, the attacker, a National Guard officer, had killed a colleague 21 kilometers away by stealing his gun and ammunition. He would then head towards the temple, trying to approach it "firing random shots at the security units defending the place of worship. The deployed agents - says the ministry in a note - prevented him from doing so and eliminated him". He, meanwhile, had struck6, one of them to death. Two Jewish pilgrims were also killed in the firefight. Another 4 civilians were also wounded, transferred to Sadok Mkadem hospital, 8 kilometers from the asynagogue.
The ministry assured that the synagogue was surrounded, stressing that visitors were secured. However, investigations are still underway to find out "the causes of this cowardly attack", adds the ministry, without mentioning the word "terrorism".
The French embassy had previously reported "an attack near the synagogue", while the Tunisian media spoke only of the killing of the first policeman and of missing witnesses in the synagogue without mentioning dead or wounded.
In El Ghriba, one of the oldest synagogues in Africa, there was an attack in 2002, with 21 dead. (ANSA).
