In the middle of this anomalous autumn -which has been anticipated since the heat waves of March- the second weekend of the month arrives in the City and Province of Buenos Aires with a "slight" rarity in the strictly climatic, but with a powerful effect on the thermal sensation. A "summer" is coming in the middle of May, with maximums of up to 24 °.
This Friday inaugurated a week that will keep us away from the strong cold for a while. Perhaps, with seven days of warm air.
For Saturday, an afternoon of sun and heat is estimated, with a minimum of 11ºC on a morning with partly cloudy skies and moderate northeast wind. With the passing of the hours, the thermometer will rise to 23 ° C. The night will continue with good weather: the north wind and 17 ° C will remain.
Sunday will allow enjoyment in any outdoor activity. The morning is expected to start with a minimum of 11 ° C, in a day that will be between sun and clouds, with an estimated maximum of 21 ° C.
Next week, as anticipated above, there will be no need to turn on the heating. The afternoons would average a maximum of 22°C and on Tuesday the mercury could touch 24°C.
And that summer would be until next weekend. There is no talk of rain and the first cool weather could occur only on Wednesday 24.
Why a summer in the middle of May?
Cindy Fernández, a meteorologist with the National Meteorological Service (SMN), explains to Clarín that although it will seem strange that it is hot in May, that rarity is not in the statistics.
The temperatures forecast for next week, he says, "are not that far from what is normal in May in the City." The average minimum temperatures are around 11/12°C and the maximum is 19/20°C.
In fact, it is far from the record. Which was 30.4°C. "That was reached on May 15, 1972," says Fernández.
Although we see that it is not rare and that it is not a record either, the data is that in the week the average maximum of May may be exceeded by 4 degrees. Why this unusual autumn heat?
"In the seasonal forecasts (the quarterly) it was announced that autumn had a high probability of being warmer than normal. And that's what's happening so far," says the meteorologist.
It has to do with the fact that in the center and north of Argentina we have a predominance of high atmospheric pressures, and the cold fronts are not advancing.
"They go through the extreme south, Patagonia, nothing else. They do not advance further north. That means that in CABA we stay in this mass of warm air that is a little warmer, and we do not have the advances of cold air, which are more recurrent at this time of year, "says the climate expert.
In March, when we suffered from heat waves, that peak of maximums was attributed to the so-called "atmospheric blockade". It was so intense that it surprised meteorologists and the forecasts changed all the time. At this time of year, was that "unlocked"?
Fernández clarifies that "blockade" is not a phenomenon in itself, but is a name with which in meteorology they refer to a situation in which weather conditions remain constant. In that case, they were maintained with high temperatures and unchanged. That is, as "blocked".
Since those heat waves in March, he says, "the situation has already changed several times." That is why it was cold days ago, it will be hot next week and it is not ruled out that the temperature drops several degrees for the extra long weekend of May 25.
