A woman was killed by a falling object near New York's famous Times Square. The 60-year-old was on Tuesday morning on the way to work just a few minutes' walk north of the Manhattan visitor magnet when the part hit her. The local media reported unanimously, citing authorities. The woman died at the scene of the accident.
The background to the incident initially remained unclear. The "New York Times" reported, however, that the owners of a nearby high-rise building noticed the authorities in April that they had violated the rules for the maintenance of the facade. Accordingly, terracotta pieces were in danger of falling. The building's owners, Himmel + Meringoff Properties, were then fined $ 1,250.
At the end of November, the "New York Times" had given permission to repair the masonry. It was initially unclear whether these have already taken place or are still pending. According to the newspaper, there was no scaffolding on the house. "This is a tragedy, and the victim's family and friends are in our thoughts," said Abigail Kunitz, spokeswoman for the New York administration for building management, about the death of the 60-year-old woman.
