A dead person, an intoxicated family, closed schools, a destroyed tent city, damage to coastal structures: these are just some of the events registered today following the wave of bad weather that has been affecting many Italian regions for days, plagued by storm winds even by force 9, polar frost and blizzards. The tragedy occurred in Cava de 'Tirreni, in the province of Salerno: the victim is a 61-year-old doctor who was walking his labrador and who unfortunately - following the strong wind - was hit in full by the fall of a century-old pine which was located inside the municipal villa. The branches of the shrub also bent the iron fence of the structure and damaged a car of a municipal executive parked and a van of a subsidiary company of the Municipality that was passing through.
The wind damage was also felt in Basilicata, where - in addition to uncovered roofs, torn cornices and many fallen branches - there was also the fall of a large tree in Potenza, which only in a fortuitous manner did not cause victims. A family made up of a father, mother and two children in Lapedona (Fano), who was intoxicated by carbon monoxide escaping from a heater whose fumes were presumably obstructed by the strong wind that blew out at that time, took a serious risk. After the first treatment in hospital, the four are out of danger.
Like the Marches, the force 9 gale wind was also felt in Puglia, where an orange alert is ongoing until midnight, putting the coasts affected by the stormy sea to the test, a situation that inevitably made intermittent maritime connections. On this front there is to be noted the arrival in the port of Bari, only this morning, with 24 hours late, of two ferries from Durres forced to find shelter for the stormy sea in the Gulf of Manfredonia.
The connections from Termoli (Campobasso) with the Tremiti Islands (Foggia) have also been interrupted. In the process of recovery, however, those between Capri and Naples, even if in fits and starts, after the stop given yesterday afternoon; departures from the Campania capital to Sorrento are still suspended.
Still in Puglia on the Bari waterfront, the waves knocked down some retaining walls and poured debris, pieces of wood and some tree trunks. During the day, still near the capital, a marine barge was recovered which due to the breakdown of the tow cables had run aground on a nearby promenade. Throughout the region, numerous schools were closed due to the weather alert issued by the Civil Protection, especially in Foggiano, where the firefighters operated continuously for the fall of trees, light poles, tiles and billboards. Fortunately, all without any injuries. Finally, a bad adventure for a group of 280 non-EU citizens hosted in San Severo (Foggia) in a tent city damaged by the gusts of wind that destroyed twenty of them.
