Deconfinement: the placement of Haute-Corse in the red zone causes misunderstanding

A deputy from Cher also claims that his territory was placed in the red zone by mistake. Possible failures in entering data

What if there were in fact only 35 departments placed in the red zone? Or even less? The classification of certain departments in the red zone, synonymous with very limited deconfinement on May 11, caused misunderstanding. Political leaders of Cher, Lot or Haute-Corse deplore this Thursday evening calculation errors.

The ARS in Corsica warns of an "overestimation" of the epidemic

The most telling example: Corsican health authorities alerted Thursday evening to data entry errors at Bastia hospital. Slag that seems to have led the Directorate General of Health to temporarily place the department 2B, Haute-Corse, in the red zone as part of the deconfinement plan.

However, since the beginning of the epidemic, Haute-Corse has always been ranked among the French territories most spared from the virus. A total of 79 people were detected positive at the Bastia hospital center, and eight died (excluding nursing homes). And only one was still in intensive care this Thursday evening. These figures, very low compared to the Grand Est or Île-de-France situations, suggested that Haute-Corse would appear in green on the first map of France for deconfinement.

The surprise was therefore total when seeing the department in red on the active circulation map of the virus unveiled by the Minister of Health Olivier Véran. Then inevitably on the so-called "synthesis". The card "leaves Corsicans more than perplexed. We are awaiting explanations, ”wrote the nationalist president of the island's executive, Gilles Simeoni, on Twitter.

A methodology error in fact seems to have crept into these maps. The Corsican regional health agency said late this Thursday evening that it had observed a counting problem. “The modalities of coding by the Bastia hospital center lead to an overestimation of the number of emergency visits for Covid out of step with the number of cases tested positive. Reliability and correction of data will take place as soon as possible, ”the agency said in a statement.

After consultation of the hospital data in free access on the Geodes site, these data entry errors are confirmed. The "rate of passage to emergency passages for suspected COVID-19" amounted to April 27, 3462 out of 10,000. Against 1291 in Paris, for comparison. This "overestimation" has been verified for several days.

There are other strange statistics from one file to another. While a graph indicates that no new hospitalizations were recorded on April 27 in Haute-Corse, another based on "the number of hospitalizations among emergency visits for suspected COVID-19" estimates that There have been 32. These kinds of differences are spotted several days in a row.

Contacted Thursday evening by the Parisian, the Directorate General of Health was not able to react to the statements of the ARS in Corsica. Nor to the existence or not of worries of erroneous calculations in other departments of France.

The deputy of Cher, François Cormier-Bouligeon, did not wait for his details to affirm on Twitter that this provisional map placed its territory in the zone "by mistake". And claims to have requested a correction, after consultation with the ARS and the prefect.
