An awake brain surgery on a 14-year-old girl flanked by her mother in the operating room for psychological support, during the removal of an area affected by an injury leading to epileptic seizures. It is an operation rarely used in the pediatric field, one of the first in Italy, the one performed today - lasting about 5 hours in total - with a positive outcome, in the operating block of the hospital "Salesi-Ospedali Riuniti di Ancona". In the field a multidisciplinary team (neurosurgical, anesthesiological, neuroradiological, neurological, neurophysiological, psychological) who, in part, worked in the preoperative phase to prepare mom and daughter to face the procedure and, in part, in the intraoperative phase with the support of technologies advanced to define the area of the brain in question and monitor the neurological functions of the young woman during the resection of the epileptogenic lesion. Wake-up surgery allows you to better identify the area to be removed and minimize the risks of functional complications.
