Around 120 firefighters were on site.

The fire had spread over an area of about one hectare.

The cause is still unclear.

The passenger operation of the Harzer Schmalspurbahn was stopped immediately.

The emergency services, material and fire-fighting water were brought as close as possible to the site by train.

Because of the hillside location, the fire department could otherwise only reach the fire on foot.

Water wagons of the narrow-gauge railway were also used.

When the fire broke out, there were numerous visitors on the highest mountain in northern Germany.

Because of the smoke pollution, they could not be brought down safely at first.

They had to hold out at the Schierke train station and on the mountain.

They were initially housed in railway wagons and provided with food, after which they could be taken down the mountain in minibuses.

The fire on the Brocken has now been largely extinguished.
