Berlin-Charlottenburg on Wednesday afternoon: Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey gets an idea of the situation near the Memorial Church.
There, around 10:30 a.m., a car crashed into a crowd on a popular shopping street.
One person died, six people are still fighting for their lives, three others are seriously injured.
According to police, the driver is a 29-year-old man.
It is not yet known whether it was an accident, a medical emergency or an intentional act.

"He drove on with the vehicle in the direction of Tauentzienstraße, corner of Marburgerstraße. In that area he left the roadway and (driven) into a shop window."
Hollywood actor John Barrowman happened to be there and describes the scene:

“The car slammed onto the sidewalk, pulled onto the street over there, hit someone. Then it continued down the street and then back onto the sidewalk, down that path and back onto the sidewalk and through a line of people.”
Passers-by held the suspected driver until police arrived.

"Of course, for us it's now about reconstructing the crime. That means our traffic accident squad is here, we have investigators here who collect the evidence, who take witness statements and of course it's about interrogating the accused."
The scene of the incident was cordoned off over a wide area.
The police and fire brigade were on site with a total of almost 200 emergency services.
The Federal Government expressed its condolences to the injured and their families.
The scene of the accident is not far from the Memorial Church on Breitscheidplatz in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
An Islamist assassin drove into a Christmas market there in December 2016 - thirteen people died and more than 70 were injured.
