Washing hands with cold water, less lighting in the stairwells: Daycare centers and schools in Zwickau are feeling the effects of the energy crisis directly. The city has announced austerity measures for all of its facilities.

In response to the energy crisis, the city of Zwickau wants to turn off the hot water in schools and daycare centers, among other places.

"We are all called upon to face this difficult situation in order to make a contribution to overcoming the energy and gas crisis - public administrations as well as companies and private individuals," said the independent building mayor Silvia Queck-Hänel in a statement on Tuesday.

This includes turning off the hot water in the buildings of the city administration and subordinate facilities.

This affects schools and daycare centers, but also museums.

"It will be parked where possible and permitted," said a city spokesman.

This applies in particular to hand wash basins in toilets.

According to the spokesman, the city wants to implement the measures in the short term and gradually.

Pupils will only find out about this in a few weeks: the first day of school after the summer holidays in Saxony is August 29th.

In offices and lounges with air conditioning in municipal buildings, it is also planned to cool the room temperature to a maximum of 26 degrees.

An exception only applies to the control center of the fire brigade and the citizen service in the town hall.

In corridors and stairwells, the lighting should be switched off or reduced during the day.

The city is therefore also checking whether it will continue to illuminate public buildings.
