Opinion | The Democratic Ghetto of the Arab Parties Israel today

2022-07-12T19:49:38.693Z

Hadash, Balad and Ta'al, each of which is a "closed club", do not allow those who do not belong to them, organizationally and ideologically, to run in the primary elections • Interested in attending and functioning? Too bad for your time

13 parties are currently members of the Knesset.

A look at their lists paints a bleak picture of the democratic process: only seven parties hold primaries: the Likud, Labor, Meretz, Religious Zionism and the Arab parties - Hadash, Balad and Ta'al, which make up the joint list but held primaries separately, and Bad Party. M.

In most parties, a personal appointment procedure is held by the party chairman, who is an omnipotent figure. If so, why do we even need a party and institutions? What control is there over its activities or its members? It has a future without a torch? New hope without a storm? All centralized mechanisms subject to the whims of one man.

A law is required that will oblige any party represented or receiving public funds to hold primaries in order to maintain competitiveness and transparency, and allow the public politically affiliated with the party to function and influence.

But this depends on the Knesset members, most of whom were not elected in democratic elections, and all of whom will oppose changing the current situation.

Even in parties where primaries take place, there is a norm of years called armor.

This flaw slapped across voters in the Jida Zoabi case.

But even in democratic parties there is an appearance: Hadash, Balad and Ta'al, each of which is a "closed club", do not allow those who do not belong to them, organizationally and ideologically, to run in the primary elections. There is no orderly regulation, but if, for example, To run in the primaries of Ta'al - the mechanism will inform me that since I have not been active in the party for years, I am not invited.

The mechanism does not allow a younger generation, a new blood, to enter and influence the party.

For 25 years we have found the same candidates in the first two places on the list.

Even the RAAM list, which had the armor of a balance of ghosts that saved it, a candidate could not run in the by-elections, which ultimately is the row council that approves them. Because he does not pray five times a day.

In the Arab parties, those who want to function on their own and appoint people to the party will not be able to do so, so the parties remain limited.

The results of the primaries in all Arab parties are known in advance.

In Hadash, each MK has two terms, including the chairman, and the division is very clear. Ethnic division: Muslim first, Christian or Christian in second place, Jew in third place, and in fourth place Druze who did not serve in the IDF.

The results have not changed in 23 years: first Ahmad Tibi, second brother-in-law Adv. Osama Saadi, and third woman, who except for the election in which the joint list received 15 seats, the place was never considered realistic.

In the crumbling Balad party, the internal elections will not even interest its members and activists, and it is the chairman, MK Osama Abu Shehadeh, who will be elected to the same position and to the same place.
