The terror attack of the murderers of Hamas, the worst and heaviest disaster we have experienced since the establishment of the State of Israel, united us as never before, but also demonstrated to all of us what we are fighting for, and most importantly, who we are fighting.
For many of us, this is a painful awakening from a pipe dream, according to which Hamas is responsible and restrained, and even a partner in the effort to maintain quiet along the Gaza border, and perhaps even one day for a long-term agreement with Israel.
Once again, it turned out that it would have been better if we had listened to what Hamas leaders say in Arabic, rather than to the learned assessments that seek to read and analyze the organization through Western eyes, as if it were a Swiss charitable organization operating according to Western logic.
It is worth remembering and mentioning that the murderers of Hamas are not aliens who came to us from another planet, and also that this is not a terrorist cell of a few terrorists who took over a region and forced itself on the population living there. This is an organization whose worldview, ideology and barbaric behavior are deeply rooted in the history – early and modern – of the region, an organization that, like many terrorist organizations that preceded it, draws inspiration from clerics, intellectuals and leaders throughout the Middle East, and what is worse, enjoys considerable support on the Middle Eastern street.
Finally, it is also worth remembering that the residents of Gaza are not ill-fated people who suddenly found themselves under the oppressive rule of Hamas. After all, many of them elected him and to this day support him and his path, as evidenced by the scenes of jubilation in the streets of Gaza on the morning of October 7, when the residents of the Gaza Strip were informed of the barbaric massacres carried out in their name by Hamas murderers.
The face of Hamas is the face of the region in which we live, and at least it is a reflection of how we treat each other in the region. In order to understand the murderousness and barbarism of Hamas, one does not have to go back to the last century, to the massacre of the Jews of Hebron or to the pogroms against Jews in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Libya – one can also look at the civil wars in Lebanon or Syria, Libya or Yemen, during which Muslim communities massacred each other, all together among the non-Muslim population living among them. And if this is how they treat each other, why should we be surprised at the murderousness directed at us?
A ray of light in the dark is, as mentioned, the convergence of Israeli society in the face of the challenge, as well as the fact that many in the Western world, and even in the Arab world, support us and hold our fingers.
The West knows and understands, finally, that we are fighting not only our war, but the entire enlightened and free world war with extremism and barbarism that threatens to engulf Europe and the United States. European cities have long become the scene of ISIS-led terrorist attacks. Now Hamas supporters are sweeping the streets – worthy heirs to the brown and black shirt men who marched through these streets 80 years ago with the same hatred and murderous look in their eyes towards everything that is Jewish, and today also everything that is Western.
The West finally knows and understands that we are fighting not only our war, but the entire enlightened and free world war with extremism and barbarism that threatens to engulf Europe and the United States
The United States also understands this, and knows that any achievement for Hamas will give Iran a boost and encourage it to harm American interests and its allies in the region. But not only Iran will record an achievement, but also the other rivals of the United States who are now rushing to side with Hamas – chief among them Russia.
And what is no less interesting is the tacit support Israel receives in its war against Hamas from many of the Arab regimes in our region. They know no less than we do who Hamas is and who the extremist forces that support it are. They also know that the only way for the region to escape backwardness, barbarism and extremism is to get rid of Hamas and its ilk, even if the ignorant mob in the streets is captivated by the organization's murderousness.
The enlightened world stands by us, but the struggle is ours and we must win it, if we want to live, in a region that knows no mercy for the weak and values only strength and power.
