Only once during these hundred bad days did I feel that I was taking part in one of the critical arenas of Israel's struggle, the arena of international propaganda.
I remember it well, because it was a moment of pride and a sense of mission.
It happened on the day it was announced that actress Cynthia Nixon opened up about Israel, I no longer remember exactly what she said and how she said, and what she thought should be between the River and the C, but she wasn't with us. And since Nixon is my favorite actress, I was heartbroken and really wanted to do something beyond just writing or talking about it, so when someone posted a link somewhere to her Instagram, I immediately went inside and began with great effort to formulate my reaction to her words, which took me a full day of sweating, translations on four apps, consulting friends and counselors, searching old "Sex and the City" fan forums and setting up focus groups, And ended with: You chose the bad side. Stupid
I have pondered a lot around the issue of stupid. They are a child from a good home, and they do not write love to an honorable woman even if she loves, but the days of rage and genius of Jacob and let them all burn. So I wrote.
And that's it. That amounted in part to the publicity effort. Voila? Could it be? How come I don't have a hand and a foot in Israel's dialogue with the world? How pathetic is it that my contribution to the matter amounts to the assertion that Cynthia Nixon chose the bad side, and that she is what she is?
It's true that it's directly related to the broken English and the terror that falls on me every time I have to communicate in English, but it's really not just that. This week I checked with many friends, some of whom believe that English is their bread and butter, and it became clear to me what I knew even earlier, and is true of the vast majority of Israelis: our direct interaction with the outside world is very weak and miserable. This is true of connections with the world in general, and – and this is even more painful – with Jews and organized Jewish communities around the world.
It's strange that the global village hasn't brought too much news in this regard. It is clear that many contacts exist, mainly on a professional basis, but far from what would be expected of a revolution of this magnitude.
A large mass of educated Israelis, who speak out online and to anyone who wants to hear in favor of Israel, could have been a game-changer and made many people think twice before choosing the bad side
Suffice it to do a simple check: How many people from abroad who do not speak Hebrew do we maintain network connections with? When I say "we" I mean members of my generation.
For millennials, it's probably different, and in our children's generation it's even better. But with us, the children of winter - almost nothing.
It's a little strange, as I said, and it can be discussed and it can also be lived in peace, in peacetime; In these crazy days, this situation also creates a huge missed opportunity.
