"The IGP Puglia oil is the fourteenth Italian denomination registered in the community: A very important result". This was stated in a note by the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies Teresa Bellanova, noting that this "testifies to the commitment of the Apulian producers in the search for quality and in the particular attention to the care of the olive groves, despite the numerous critical issues they have had to face in the course of the last vintage ".

The situation, in fact, underlines the minister, "continues to be critical both for the continuous drop in the price of oil, due, among other things, to competition from the foreign product, and for the sharp drop in production, due to the loss of many plants due to the presence of xylella. Precisely for this reason, the registration by Brussels of the IGP 'Olio di Puglia' represents a great step forward towards the enhancement of a territory rich in resources and a viaticum, as well as a significant recognition , for the agriculture of the whole region ". The PGI Oil of Puglia, he continues, "is characterized by the great variety of sensorial characteristics that derive from the genotype of its numerous native cultivars, from the peculiarities of the geographical and pedo-climatic environment and from the cultivation and extraction techniques typical of the territory of It is a high quality extra virgin olive oil with a high content of polyphenols and of certain regional origin. The production area of the PGI includes the entire Apulian regional territory ". Several companies have joined the PGI control system in the year 2019. At the moment there are 348 producers, 54 mills and 44 between packers and intermediaries.

As a rough estimate, a potential of around 324,000 tons of olives, 5,200 tons of "Olio di Puglia" PGI can be estimated for the current campaign. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/2202 registering the PGI in the European register of protected designations of origin is published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 23 December 2019.
