There is a boom in the consumption of sustainable lemons with edible peel, an added value of which more and more consumers have become aware with the health emergency. Versatile citrus fruit for uses and seasonality, it has become the mirror of a more attentive and demanding consumer in terms of territoriality and origin. This was announced by Unifrutti, one of the main Italian producers, importers and distributors of fresh fruit, underlining that lemon is the third category with the highest turnover in 2020 in the field of sustainable agriculture, a result that goes hand in hand with the edibility of the peel that allows it to be consumed safely in all its parts, from the peel to the juice, with Italy responding to particularly rigorous quality standards. A need linked primarily to the kitchen,another household habit that the pandemic has helped to revive in the lives of Italians in the last year.
"Thanks to the different lemon productions of the group, located in various climatic areas - explains the CEO of Unifrutti Italia, Gianluca Defendini - we are making a careful selection of the crops in order to distribute large volumes of edible lemons 365 days a year" . During the winter season, for example, the Italian demand is satisfied with Sicilian Made in Italy lemons, including the Femminello di Siracusa Igp. For the summer one, Unifrutti plans to triple the import of the Eureka variety with peel without wax and chem-free, coming from the 300 hectares in Argentina and from the South Africa division of the group, with a constant increase in quality standards. Unifrutti will initiate a change also on oranges, with thearrival of Navel and Valencia with edible peel from South Africa to expand this segment more and more. (HANDLE).
