The Saarland police are investigating a 58-year-old man who is said to have fatally injured a cyclist and then fled.
According to a report on Sunday evening, the alleged perpetrator was on a country road in the municipality of Nohfelden.
At around 10:24 p.m., he is said to have crossed into the oncoming lane in a curve with his "high-powered" Audi RS3 Sportback.
He captured the 60-year-old "almost frontally".
Two inmates are said to have escaped
A neutral witness observed what happened.
The Audi driver got out briefly, checked his vehicle and then drove away, the witness said, according to the police.
The witness also observed that two inmates got out and ran away.
The police were able to identify the suspect thanks to this and other witness statements.
He was found not far from his apartment and said he was "considerably drunk."
He is charged with negligent homicide and hit and run.
