Butter has not only become more expensive, it has also become inferior in quality.

This is the result of the new Ökotest.

Ökotest took a closer look at various brands of butter and the test results are worrying: 17 types of butter out of 20 tested failed.

Ökotest lists mineral oil components as the main reason.

Of 14 butters rated 6, i.e. “insufficient”, 13 brands were found to have significantly increased mineral oil values.

In addition, the value of green fodder-typical fatty acids is often too low.

According to Ökotest, the omega-3 fatty acids show how the animals were kept and how much grass or hay the cows, from whose milk the butter was made, ate.

When frying or baking, do you also like to use fats other than butter, such as margarine?

You can also substitute oil for butter.

The butter-oil conversion table, for example, is helpful.

Some baking recipes do not require any butter at all, such as the healthy sugar-free banana cake.

The big losers in Ökotest's butter analysis

Ökotest found the most mineral oil residues in the ÖMA Allgäu farmer's butter sour cream.

By far the most saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons were detected in the tested butter.

In addition, the butter loser stood out negatively in the Ökotest with a value of 19.8 mg/kg of aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons - ten times higher than the EU guideline value.

This is a content that has never been measured in our test history.

Other well-known and popular butter brands were also rated very poorly and failed the Ökotest.

These include established brands such as Alnatura mountain farmers sweet cream butter, Landliebe butter, creamy and fresh, mildly acidified, and Kerrygold Original Irish butter, mildly acidified, as well as bestsellers from popular supermarket chains, such as Gut & Billig German branded butter, mildly acidified by Edeka, Ja!
