Jogger on a frozen river (symbol image): »The German in me won the discussion«
Photo:
FRANCOIS NASCIMBENI v AFP
When we referred to the Germans as "machines" in our last column, there was isolated indignation in the comments.
This term was by no means meant as a criticism.
However, today I would like to tell you about a new image that I associate with the Germans.
How about the »fighter« instead of a »machine«?
Before some readers complain about this again crooked picture and the inadmissible generalization, let me say: It is only a very personal and subjective idea that helps me and that is actually based on a cultural difference.
I have had German citizenship for about two months.
The new German I'm sitting on the sofa as right now was just talking to myself with the Syrian I was until recently.

The Syrian in me spoke to the German in me: »I had a cold, it's very cold and I haven't been jogging for three days.« The German in me replied: »Would you like to accompany me?
I go jogging regularly.” The Syrian in me actually preferred to drink tea and continue to sit on the couch.
The German in me continued, "I don't like exceptions.
Running has now become a ritual for us, you run with great regularity.
And the weather should never be a reason not to go jogging.
You know there's no such thing as bad weather in my country, only bad clothing.« The German in me had won the argument, so I dressed warmly and did my rounds as usual.
