PR - one-time

By the beginning of the previous decade, few in Hollywood had heard of Chadwick Bozeman, but he soon became one of the busiest actors in the industry. In recent years, he has been seen everywhere - in the various "Avengers" films, in which he played the character of the Black Panther; In dramas like "Marshall"; In generic action thrillers like "21 Bridges" and most recently also in "Norman's Gold" on Netflix, where the actor first collaborated with Spike Lee, the important black filmmaker of our generation.

And now, it turns out that all of this was done by Bozman between surgeries and treatments, while battling cancer, which between one photo day and another evolved from stage three to four, until even the brave warrior had to give up.

In the age of social networks, it is easy to be tempted to the illusion that we know everything about the lives of cultural figures like Bozman, but here - as was the case at the time in the case of Ronit Alkabetz, it turned out that we know nothing. The star discreetly kept track of the details of his medical condition, and few were aware of him, in the industry and certainly in the general public. Therefore, the thing of his death this morning at the age of only 43 was received with such great shock, and proved to us how vast the gap is between what we see on screen and what happens in a person's life.

And another important lesson: Recently, pictures of Bozeman have surfaced on the Internet in which he looks sickly thin. These records often slipped under the radar, but whoever was exposed to them, reacted recklessly and ugly to our era, and even raised the speculation that the actor is addicted to crack and therefore looks like this. The truth, of course, was quite different, so here's another reminder of why you should avoid drawing personal conclusions before running to the keyboard.

Bozeman's career was short. Not only did he die at such a young age, but he experienced a rather late rash in the first place. But in the little time he had on this planet, the actor managed to become a symbol - a symbol of the heights to which the black community in the United States can soar.

He did so in the drama films in which he starred - "42", in which he played Jackie Robinson, the first black baseball player to appear in the professional league; "Marshall," in which he played Thurgood Marshall, the first black Supreme Court justice; And "Get Up on Your Feet," in which he stepped into the shoes of the godfather of soul music, James Brown.

More importantly, he did so in Marvel's fantasy films in which he played the Black Panther, an African prince and superhero who revealed to us what spectacular powers Africa could have achieved in a world without colonialism, imperialism and slavery.

The Black Panther solo film, released three years ago, was a huge blockbuster (here too) and grew into a real cultural phenomenon and for a formative moment in the formation of a new pride and black identity, in the United States and around the world. No wonder, then, that among the many Sufis and Bozeman we also find Barack Obama and Camela Harris (and also Joe Biden).

So true, Bozeman has never won an Oscar, he has had almost no hits beyond the Marvel movies, he has not stepped on too many red carpets at festivals and it is doubtful we will see many of his works in cinemas in the future - but it is doubtful there will be many more Hollywood stars, probably at this age, The former and whoever they may be the future president and his deputy will bother to pay tribute to them.

And among all the obituaries, there was also a not-so-smart American website that rushed to put up a speculative article in which he wondered how Marvel Studios would do without Bozeman in the sequel to "The Black Panther," which is set to go into production soon. Of course he was fired upon on social media, because who cares about that question now?

Still, this is an opportunity to mention two things. First, Bozeman's career was in full swing and he was expected to set many records, including a reunion with the iconic figure of the Black Panther. What a tragedy, what a miss.

Second: Bozeman is the first star from Marvel's expanded universe to die, including the first cinematic superhero to happen to it since Christopher Reeve (Heath Ledger, remember, played a villain, not a superhero). These things are not said for practical reasons or as a statistical curiosity but as an illustration that death can strike us all, at any age and anywhere, because in the face of cancer there are no superheroes; As another reminder, if anyone needed it, how short and temporary life is.
