The 'avalanche' of innovative (and attractive) SUVs that Chinese manufacturers have presented in recent months with the obvious aim of adding competitive models for the US and European markets does not stop.
After BYD, Chery and Great Wall Motor, it is now the turn of the Changan Group, which has used its Deepal brand to launch the G318 model.
For the moment, no details are known about this new 4x4, with a squared design - which evidently takes the most recent premium models as a reference - except for the length (almost 5 meters) and the 'traditional' construction with a spar frame to offer optimal off-road behavior, derived from Changan's EPA1 architecture.
According to Chinese media, the Deepal G318 SUV should initially be offered in a hybrid version with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine intended only to recharge the 19.0 kWh or 28.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. The 4x4 propulsion system, on the other hand, is fully electric, with two motors - one on each axle - that deliver a combined power of 258 hp. Subsequently, this new SUV from the Changan Group should also be offered in a 100% electric version and also with a fuel cell system to use hydrogen as an energy source.
As pointed out by the British magazine Autocar - which reported the news - the Deepal brand, launched in 2022, aims for global diffusion and through the entry into the European market after the Asian ones, it aims to reach an annual production of 450,000 units by 2024. This figure is expected to represent more than 17% of Chagan's global sales, which in 2023 were 2.55 million units.
