The 2023 global registration figures indicate that the Volkswagen brand significantly increased its deliveries to around 4.87 million units, a growth of 6.7%. This result was driven by the success of the Wolfsburg-based company's SUVs, a trend that continued in 2023.
The share of SUVs in total deliveries grew again to 54.2%, an increase of 14.9% compared to 2022.
In the U.S., more than 81% of Volkswagen's sales were SUVs. In Europe, the T-Roc remains Volkswagen's best-selling SUV, setting new delivery records in Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and Turkey, Compared to the general 2023 one, the increase in sales of Volkswagen-branded electric models was even higher. Deliveries worldwide were around 394,000, an increase of 21.1% compared to the previous year. The largest markets for the Volkswagen brand's all-electric cars, in absolute terms, were: China, Germany, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Norway and Belgium.
In Germany, for example, around 30,000 units of the ID.4 model were delivered (+62.9%). This electric car was also well received in the United States. The 38,000 registrations correspond to an increase of 84.2% compared to 2022. The compact electric ID.3 was particularly popular in China with more than 75,000 units delivered, an increase of more than 200 percent year-on-year. In Italy, in 2023 the Volkswagen brand was confirmed as the first importer for the twelfth consecutive year, even being the best-selling brand in December. The Volkswagen brand, with almost 123,000 registrations, achieved a market share of 7.84% in Italy, up 17.1% compared to 2022. At the top of the ranking of the most popular Volkswagen models by Italians in 2023 - for the fifth time in a row - was the T-Roc SUV, which totaled almost 33,000 registrations. This is followed by T-Cross (almost 22,000 units) and Polo (almost 19,000 units).
Imelda Labbé, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand with responsibility for Sales, Marketing and After-Sales, said: "The delivery figures show that we are on the right track as a brand and that our cars are well received by our customers. We expect the market environment to remain challenging in 2024. But with our revised and attractive product portfolio, we are in the right position."
For 2024, Volkswagen expects positive sales dynamics thanks to new versions of some of its best-selling and most important models. The new generations of the Passat and Tiguan and T-Cross will hit the market in the first quarter of 2024. The ID.4 and ID.5 - which have just received a major update - will be joined among the new 2024 models by the all-new ID.7 Tourer, i.e. station wagon of the all-electric flagship model ID.7. Volkswagen plans to produce an all-electric SUV in the high-volume C-segment starting in 2026. Half a century after the first generation, that of 1974, Volkswagen will present an evolution of the eighth-generation Golf.
Significant aesthetic improvements are expected, as well as new infotainment and next-generation software. Pre-sales for the refreshed Golf are scheduled to begin next spring.
